DILAPIDATIONS

NATIONAL PHYSICS LABORATORY

National Physics Laboratory
Building 84, Velux Windows

Contract Type:

NEC3

Contract Period:

6 weeks

Client:

ISS
Project Value: £101,000

Brief/Scope of works:

Building 84 is within the overall site campus of the National Physics Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington. The NPL site is a secure site with access controlled by strict security clearance.

The works comprise the removal and replacement of 12 Velux windows within the client’s reception atrium area. The windows are located 14m above ground level so safe access and egress were critical to carry out the works.

New solar powered Velux windows were installed with remote control operation.

Upon completion the works ceiling and walls were decorated, and lighting modified while access was available.

Challenges:

The main challenge was the safe access for labour and materials in the roof atrium area. The Velux windows are 14m above ground level and required a design access scaffold in the Clients Reception area.

The scaffold was designed and erected around existing pedestrian routes, lighting and alarm systems to maintain the building operations during the works.
